Boy I Am is an exploration of the experiences
of three young transitioning female-to-male transgender
men in New York City as they go through major junctures
in their transitions, as well as through the voices of
lesbians, activists and theorists who raise and address
the questions that many people have but few openly
discuss. The film will be followed by a discussion with

Race, Gender, Voice, and Representation: A
Retrospective of the Work of Marlon Riggs
Whittenberger
Auditorium, Indiana University
This special retrospective of the work of experimental
filmmaker and artist Marlon Riggs will be accompanied by
a screening of The Aggressives
(USA, 2005, 75 min., dir. Daniel Peddle), a feature
documentary that explores the lives of six
women-of-color living in New York City who assume the
gender category “aggressive.” Following the screening
will be a discussion of the films and an examination of
Riggs' revolutionary filmmaking and iconic influence on
representations of black sexualities since his death in
1994. Guest speaker Shaka McGlotten, Assistant Professor
of Media, Society, and the Arts from Purchase College,
will explore why there remain so few contemporary works
that take up Riggs' layered investigations of racial and
sexual difference, cultural politics, and expressive
cultures. This event is FREE and open to the public!
