Following the format of the popular live storytelling event produced by The Moth, “Off Night Stories: Winter Holidays” will feature a series of true stories about the holiday season, told live on stage in front of an audience. The show will include performances from new and well known artists, including Steve Scott, Greta Lind, Darrell Anne Stone and Richard Crowe.

“Off Night Stories: Winter Holidays” will be performed concert-style, with a live band (lead by Ben Jackson) providing original underscoring and interludes based on popular holiday music. Audiences can look forward to stories ranging from the heartfelt to the hilarious. You’ll hear about ambitious holiday cooking projects. You’ll learn what it’s like to travel cross country during the holidays with two toddlers when absolutely everything that can go wrong does go wrong. You’ll experience the magic of Mexico’s “ La Posadas,” and feel a family’s joy when their father appears unexpectedly on their doorstep on Christmas eve. From finding the strength to forgive, to finding the strength to leave, the stories in this production are a testament to the ways in which the holidays can bring out the best in all of us.

“There’s a theme across the foundational stories of all winter holidays,” director Aubrey Seader remarks, “which is that we can endure any season of darkness by finding light and hope in love and community. We think that during this time of year, no matter which holidays you celebrate, we can all benefit from hearing stories that share that common thread of love, community, and resilience.”

What began as a casual jam session over a decade ago has become one of today’s leaders in the Americana/Bluegrass music world. The venerable Rounder Records immediately signed the band and released their eponymous debut in 2008 that scored their first GRAMMY nomination for Best Country Performance by a Duo or Group w/ Vocal for the song Blue Side Of The Mountain. Again in 2010, the group’s sophomore effort “Reckless”, received two more nods for Best Bluegrass Album and Best Country Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocal, courtesy of the universally popular hit Where Rainbows Never Die. The group’s star continued to rise with the release “Hammer Down” that debuted at #1 on the Billboard Bluegrass Charts. Their accomplishments continued with the highly anticipated 2015 “The Muscle Shoals Recordings” that also won a GRAMMY for Best Bluegrass Album, as well as three IBMA nominations for Album, Song, Songwriter (Tammy Rogers) and Liner Notes (Peter Cooper) of the Year honors. In 2018 the group made Grand Ole Opry history as the quintet was joined by superstars John Prine and Bill Murray on the revered stage to perform. Other accolades include a cameo in the Murray flick “Get Low,” music placement in various TV and movies including the popular drama “Yellowstone,” and special recordings with the military group Six String Soldiers. In 2020, Tammy Rogers, Michael Fleming, Richard Bailey, Brent Truitt and Kelvin Damrell (his first project as lead vocals) released the chart-topping “Bad For You” to both industry and media aplomb. 2021 brought the latest member on board, lead singer Matt Dame. The quintet tours an average of 75 dates annually while continuing to bring world-class music to people.

Kade Puckett will open the show!
Spontaneous, magical, and honest, Kade Puckett's live performance is both engaging and entertaining. He is the 2013 Indiana State Fingerstyle Guitar champ, his song 'Timmy Jo' was chosen as the theme song for WTIU's (PBS) show The Weekly Special, and in high school he helped build the world's largest guitar -- which was later purchased by Dick Clark. Puckett, also an award-winning songwriter, performs all genres of music and can be seen in a variety of venues across the United States.

Over the Rhine's 15th studio album marks the duo's 30th continuous year of writing, recording and touring together. In that time, singer songwriters/ multi-instrumentalists Karin Bergquist and Linford Detweiler (who've been married for 22 years) have built a vivid, emotionally-charged body of work that has won them a deeply devoted following and critical acclaim. Like its predecessors, Love & Revelation showcases the pair's timeless songcraft and understated yet soulful delivery. Those qualities are prominent on such memorable new songs as "Los Lunas," "Let You Down," "Broken Angels" and "Making Pictures," whose insistent melodies and striking lyrical imagery haunt the listener long after the music fades.

With The Hurting Kind, John Paul White has crafted a stunning album that draws on the lush, orchestrated music made in Nashville in the early 1960s. Yet these songs retain a modern feel, whether he’s writing about overwhelming love, unraveling relationships, or fading memory of a loved one.

White grew up in tiny Loretto, Tennessee, and now lives in Florence, Alabama, not far from Muscle Shoals. He has cultivated a music career in Nashville for two decades, first as a songwriter for a major publisher, then half of The Civil Wars – a groundbreaking duo that won four Grammy Awards before disbanding in 2012.

Because The Civil Wars were so hard to categorize, White has earned a fanbase among indie rock listeners, folk audiences, Americana outlets and AAA radio. So, what will happen if people hear The Hurting Kind and call it country? “Well that doesn’t scare me in the least,” he says. “As a matter of fact, it kind of thrills me.”

Antonín Dvořák found inspiration, respite, and sheer joy in the forests surrounding his country home. Biographer Hanz-Hubert Schönzeler observed, “When one walks in those forests surrounding Dvořák’s country home on a sunny summer’s day, with the birds singing and the leaves of trees rustling in a gentle breeze, one can virtually hear the music.”

Also on the program, French composer Gabriel Pierné’s delightful Concertstück for Harp and Orchestra, Op. 39, and Jessie Montgomery’s moving orchestral tribute to the 200th anniversary of the Star-Spangled Banner, entitled Banner.

Lili Boulanger is often overlooked compared to her better-known sister, Nadia, however she was also a groundbreaking composer in her own right. D'un soir triste (Of a Sad Evening) is shrouded in dark orchestral colors and pushes the boundaries of conventional harmonies for its time. This personal and expressive sonic exploration was completed only a few months before Lili died at the young age of 24.

The shocking originality of Berlioz’s Symphonie fantastique goes well beyond the programmatic to enter the realm of the psychological. Its exploration of an unstable, drug-addled mind spills into hallucinations, and is both disturbing and enervating. We hope you’ll join us for this very special, thought-provoking program.
