Mike Adams at His Honest Weight
A “pop savant of the first order” (All Music) who “projects an outsize persona from the stage” (Pitchfork), Mike Adams has created a singular homespun entertainment universe since 2011’s Oscillate Wisely. He’s an appealingly confident showman on his cable access-style variety show The Mike Adams Show, and a affably humble Hoosier touring musician on his podcast Tan Van Tour Talk. As Mike Adams at His Honest Weight, he’s a hooky songwriter and multi-instrumentalist with a knack for embodying contradictions. The latest in a prolific stream of recordings, Guess for Thrills gets deep, blending 70’s inspired pop songs with synthesizer-driven atmospherics and emerging with a wild and searching album that treats ambiguity as a place of discovery. This combination of ephemera, vulnerable songwriting, and sonic homage to his many influences make Guess for Thrills a new leap for Adams. It’s kicking around somewhere between levity and gravity; sincerity and satire; retro and contemporary, but with a new level of intimacy and self realization.
Rodeola
Bloomington’s Kate Long is the lush and lo-fi Rodeola. Since 2006, Long has quietly released her ambient-leaning folk-rock with a minimalist focus on mood over structure. Built around her halcyon, indelible voice, Long’s songs tend to examine the transient meaning and often uncomfortable complexity of relationships. Rodeola’s 2021 self-released album Arlene received unsolicited attention from Pitchfork, who described it as “alternately knotty and radiant”, and from Brooklyn Vegan, who deemed it “Timeless”.
Damion
Damion is a musician and songwriter based in Bloomington.
Comedian Shanda Sung will emcee
Shanda is a Bloomington favorite and regular at the Comedy Attic, where she recently taped her 1st special Pickles which will release in 2024. She has performed stand up throughout the Midwest and was featured in the album On Tour Live From Bloomington as well as the premier episode of the Vice network show Hunters. Shanda was featured at Limestone Comedy Festival, the Milwaukee Comedy Festival and the Finger Lakes Comedy Festival. Shanda’s comedy is a look into her sometimes absurd life as a mother, woman, and human being but audiences only need to be one of the 3 to find her relatable and hilarious.
Will-call will be available for pick up at the Bloom Box Office at the Buskirk-Chumley Theater until 3pm on 11/17. After that will-call will be moved to the Waldron Arts Center (122 S. Walnut St.) and will be available again when doors open. If the event is not sold out tickets will be available for purchase at the door. Cash, check and card methods of payment will be accepted at the door.
