SUPPORT THE ARTS WITH YOUR TIME
Would you like to get behind the scenes at Bloomington’s Community Theater? Are you ready to help make music, dance, theater, and more possible at the BCT? We’ve got the opportunity for you! Volunteering at the Buskirk-Chumley Theater will connect you to the hub of cultural life in Bloomington and allow you to explore new artists and performance styles.
Our volunteer ushers create a welcoming, enjoyable environment at the theater. We are always looking for enthusiastic, outgoing, customer service-oriented individuals to take tickets, seat patrons, sell artist merchandise, and perform a variety of other tasks that help our events go smoothly. Go behind the scenes of some of the greatest events on Bloomington’s busy cultural agenda.
In addition to meeting great people and seeing dynamic shows, if you usher twice in a month you can receive one complimentary ticket to the show of your choice within the following 90 days, depending on availability. If you usher 12 or more times a year and attend an additional annual training, you’ll be added to the VIP usher list the following year. VIP ushers receive a permanent BCT name tag and the opportunity to sign up early for popular shows.
Ushers must be at least 18 years of age and are asked to attend a two-hour orientation before signing up for their first shift.
If you’d like to learn more about volunteering as a BCT usher, please take a look at our Volunteer Usher Handbook.
If you are between the ages of 15 and 17, there is still an opportunity for you to join our usher team. You can apply to be an usher by writing a 150- to 200-word essay on why you would like to usher at the BCT. Include your full name, age, email address, and phone number at the top of your essay. Email this to the volunteer coordinator at email@example.com.
Ready to sign up? As you know, you will attend one of our monthly two-hour orientation sessions before signing up for your first shift. You can:
- Contact Ian Carstens, our volunteer coordinator, at firstname.lastname@example.org to get started or ask questions.
- Check out our listing on the Bloomington Volunteer Network for more information, training dates, and to RSVP.
- Sign up below to be invited to the next training session.
Help spread the word about events at the BCT by joining our Street Team, which distributes posters across Bloomington to promote nationally-known performers. Poster team volunteers sign up to cover a section of town and are provided with a list of posting locations. Expect 10-12 posting sessions per year.
This is a great opportunity for volunteers who need a flexible schedule or who want to learn more about the community. Two rounds of postering within a one-year period makes you eligible for a complimentary ticket to the show of your choice, depending on availability. Ready to get started? Contact the box office at 812.323.3020 or email@example.com.
VOLUNTEER OF THE YEAR
The 2019 Jim Mahan BCT Volunteer of the Year Award for outstanding volunteer work was awarded to the team of Patty Denison & Gary Arbeiter.
Patty & Gary began volunteering in 2017 and have since become two of our most dedicated volunteer ushers. Highly confident, helpful, and fun, we’re always delighted to see that they have signed up for an event – whether together or independently. The two of them contributed more than 280 volunteer hours in 2018 alone!
